A Poem A Day, №6

The Ram
I wish I were a ram
Lord of all ewes that I survey
I would bleat my commands from atop a hill
And the meadows would ring with my authoritative yet at the same time compassionate style of leadership
I would sire many lambs
And they would be tender and juicy
When eaten by humans
I would be the kind of ram who likes to think the humans enjoy eating my children
I would leave notes by the humans’ door
With advice on innovative cooking techniques
Or ideas for sauces
To bring out the flavour in my delicious babies
Nobody would know who left the notes
Nobody would suspect that a ram could write notes
And leave them by a door
But they would appreciate the tips
No wolves would threaten my flock
I would keep the wolves away
Through assertiveness
And constructive compromise
As a ram I would read extensively on proactive management methods
And every now and then
I would run headfirst into a tree
And cause myself severe head trauma
Because being a ram
Is not all fun
